Galena Ride Weekend Wrap Up

This past weekend we met up with Johnny Scheff and the group from Chicago Motoworks for a ride/rally at Chestnut Mountain Lodge near Galena, Illinois.  This event was also held in conjunction with the Chicago Dual Sport Riders group and Terry Gerken.  It was difficult to get a total count because riders were coming and going throughout the entire weekend, but I would estimate between 70 and 100 riders participated at one point or another.

Friday night, Johnny hosted a cookout and a bonfire.  This was a great time to meet other riders and make plans for the following day’s ride.

The forecast for Saturday was predicting rain, so we wanted to get an early start.  I was leading the paved rides, so I asked everyone to be ready to roll by 8:00.  In spite of our large group (14 riders) everyone did a great job and we were rolling by 8:05, so I called that our first success of the day.

We had a great group of riders with a wide variety of ages and bikes.  In addition to the great riding we made stops at Charles Mound (highest point in Illinois), at Cajun Jack’s for lunch, and at the Apple Canyon Lake Waterfall.  We also made stops in Hazel Green and Hanover for gas and snacks.

On Saturday night Terry and Johnny had a cookout for everyone at the Blanding Rec. Area Campground.  This was another great night of meeting new people and rehashing the day’s rides.

On Sunday we decided to get an early start because everyone would have to travel home by the end of the day.   Even though we had another big group  (12 or 13) we still managed to get rolling by 8:05, so thank you everyone for being ready on time again!!

We had a shorter day riding day planned, but it was still a lot of fun.  We stopped at the Apple River Fort in Elizabeth, the rode to Loren for brunch at the Slurp and Burp.  From there we made our way to Savanna where the group split up with some returning to Chestnut and some heading for home.

Here are some of the highlights from Sunday:

I want to thank Johnny and Terry for organizing this great event and for asking us to participate.  I had a blast and met a ton of cool people.  I hope I don’t have to wait until next spring to see them again.
